Bird Cage Fixtures

I have a thing for bird cages. I use them as planters in my garden, as decor on the mantle, and now…

as light fixtures. I removed the plain shades from two of my light fixtures and hung up bird cages instead. To get them to stay, I removed the short bolts that held the old cover in place. I replaced them with longer bolts that I inserted between the decorative scrollwork and into the fixture’s holes. Instead of being pinched in place, like the old shade was, this one hangs on the bolts.

I can undo the top of this bird cage to change the light bulb. And now I have a new fetish to obsess over…

Pantry Food Storage Solution

We all know it’s smart to be prepared with a good stock of food storage. But who has room for all those cans? And is there an easy way to keep them rotated? I’ve seen infomercials for storage systems that cost more than $300. That could buy a lot of canned goods! My dad came up with a smart solution I want to share with you.

Steel shelves like these are available at home improvement stores. They can be screwed together to fit the height of your ceiling, and are a narrow 12 inches deep. A 5-foot shelf goes for about $25.

To turn these basic shelves into a food storage system, flip the shelves upside down so that the lip creates an edge to keep the cans from rolling off.

Screw one end of each shelf into a higher slot than the opposite end. Be sure to flip the shelves upside down Screwing the shelf in at a slight angle will allow the cans to roll down when one is removed from the end.

Keep your canned food supply fresh by always loading the groceries on the high end, and removing from the lower end.

Be sure to bolt the storage unit to studs in the wall to prevent accidents. Check the weight limit for each shelf to ensure it will support the weight of your goods.

You can label the shelves with a paint marker, or labeled magnetic strips.
