This week I spent some time giving my 8-year-old niece sewing lessons. It reminded me of when I was a beginning sewist and every new project was a blend of frustration and anticipation. I think the key to enjoying sewing as a beginner is choosing the right project to start with. Selecting a simple design with good instructions inspires confidence.
For my niece, I taught her how to sew a simple unlined skirt. Then, since we had fabric left over, we made a matching skirt for her American Girl doll.
And with the scraps that we had left, we squeezed out one more sewing project: an easy headband.
