Carrington Lettering Style

Introducing “Carrington,” a clean print style that has a bit of a retro vibe. Try it in your modern calligraphy projects!

Tips:

1
Unlike traditional calligraphy, which has a lot of rules, modern calligraphy is more about finding your own style while creating something fresh and fun. I’ve been working on a series of alphabets that feature different lettering styles. Pick the one that best fits the mood of your project, or mix and match them for an interesting layout.

2
You’ll need India ink. Today I’m using Speedball Super Black. I like to pour my ink in a dappen dish, which you can buy at beauty supply stores. You’ll also need a dip pen and a nib; I’m using Speedball’s 512 nib. Finally, you’ll need quality paper, such as Strathmore’s Writing series.

How to:

1
Dip your nib about halfway into the ink. Wipe the excess ink on the side of the jar, and do a few test strokes on scratch paper.

2
Apply pressure on the downstroke to thicken the line. Don’t apply pressure on upstrokes or horizontal strokes.

3
You can vary the appearance of this lettering style by increasing the slant. On the printed guide, I slanted my letters to the right. Today I’m keeping them almost vertical.

4
You may wish to lift the nib when making cross strokes, as the ink can puddle if you try to drag the nib through a freshly drawn line.

5
If you run out of ink mid-stroke, re-ink your nib and re-trace the last line you drew to create a smooth stroke.

6
Now try putting the letters together to write words.

7
Pair it with a flourish lettering style to make an interesting layout.
