I love the look of chalkboard tags and labels, but they aren’t always cheap or easy to find. So I like to make my own inexpensive chalkboard-inspired tags for gifts and parties.
Tips:

You’ll need untextured black cardstock. You can buy packages of this at Wal-Mart.

You’ll need standard chalkboard chalk. I’m also using a variety of paper punches, but you can cut out shapes by hand if you prefer.

You’ll also need white Gelly Roll pens. These have a nice fine tip that allows for much more detail than chalk would. And the ink shows up beautifully on black paper.

Finally, you’ll need a scrap of flannel to use a an eraser. (Alternately, you could use a sock.)

Hold the chalk sideways and lightly rub the entire sheet of black cardstock. Use the piece of flannel or sock to wipe the chalk off in a circular motion.

Turn the paper and rub the chalk in the opposite direction. Then wipe off the excess chalk. The paper now has the dusty texture of a chalkboard.

Use the paper punches to make labels, or cut out shapes by hand

Write in the center of the shape using the white Gelly Roll pen. You can add borders for extra detail.

It’s fun to play around with different lettering styles. Try a border of leaves, and finish with a simple poinsettia. You could embellish tags with small drawings, like ornaments, holly, or a stocking.

I’m drawing a snowflake on this round tag. Start by drawing an asterisk, then turn each line into a sort of kite shape. Top off each point with a dot. A dashed border and a script name will finish this one off.

Punch a hole at the top of the tag, and thread through a ribbon to top off your packages.

This is also a great technique for creating food labels for parties. They have all the charm of chalkboard labels, but you don’t have to worry about the words accidentally getting smudged throughout the night. Consider displaying the labels using clothespins or small easels.
Wrapping Paper

Since I have my white Gelly Roll out, I’m going to design some wrapping paper too. I bought this black wrapping paper at Wal-Mart, but you could also use black butcher paper, which is often sold for about .30 a foot at craft stores.2
You can make a border of pine branches by drawing a curved line. Add a row of V’s down the center. This is a really inexpensive and pretty way to personalize gifts for the holidays!
