You’ll need to purchase letters to spell out “LUCKY.” You can find letters like this in craft stores, in paper mache or wood.

Begin by painting the letters copper. Acrylic paint with a foam brush is the fastest. Cover your work area with newspaper or wrapping paper. If your letters are paper mache or unfinished wood, one coat should do fine. If you purchased the pre-painted white letters, you’ll need to do two coats.

Once your letters are dry, you can begin to add the pennies. I used about $3 worth. If your style is more modern, you can request a roll of new pennies at the bank, and they will be bright and uniform. I prefer the eclectic look and the varying shades of older pennies.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the pennies. I chose to glue all of my pennies heads up. Try to space them so you don’t have any large gaps. Alternating pennies with different patinas will give the piece added dimension.

Once your letters are covered, you have the option of coating them in a layer of glossy Mod Podge. This will make even the oldest pennies shine.

Prop your lucky penny letters on your mantle for an eye-catching display.

Mod Podge costs about $3 for a bottle that size. You can buy it at craft stores or at Wal-Mart. And I’ve used it in MANY projects. Just search for “Mod Podge” and you’ll find a bunch :)
