If you’re new to quilting, sewing a triangle quilt may seem a little tricky. But it’s really quite simple when you use template, like this free printable I’ve created.

I happen to have a bunch of charm squares from my Sew Sampler subscription box, by FatQuarterShop.com. However, you can cut a triangle from any piece of fabric that’s at least 5 inches square.
How to:

I like to mount my templates onto stiff chipboard so they’re more durable, but that’s optional. I use a rotary cutter and quilter’s ruler to cut several triangles at once. Cut all sides of the triangles. Remember to always cut away from yourself. You can either rotate the cutting mat, or change your position at the table.
You’ll notice that the triangle template has the points cut off. This will allow our seams to overlap neatly, with no need to stagger the pieces or trim the points later.

Lay out the triangles in rows, mixing the fabrics in a pleasing way.

Lay the first two triangles right-sides together, then sew along the right side with a ¼ inch seam. There’s no need to backstitch, as all of the ends will be caught in seams later when you join your rows.

Press the seam, then add the next triangle on top, right sides together, aligning the unsewn edge.

I’m just doing a quick demo today, so I’ll pretend I have two full rows of triangles for my quilt. Join the rows by placing right-sides together, and pinning the bottom edge. I like to add a pin at every point where the triangles meet. Do your best to align these seams nicely.
If you’ve done a good job aligning your seams, your triangles will meet in the center with nice, sharp points.

Sew the rows together with a ¼ inch seam, and press. Continue to add rows.

When all of your rows are assembled, use your rotary cutter and quilter’s ruler to cut the triangles on the left and right sides in half, giving you a straight edge for binding.
